据启德留学发布的留学趋势报告显示,2012-2016年,意向出国读本科、高中及以下学历的学生占比增加了13%,中国留学生的超低龄趋势日益明显。伴随着留学低龄化的大趋势,近年来美国高中申请的竞争愈演愈烈,学生个人与家庭都需要在申请过程中投入大量的时间和精力,然而申请经验的缺乏也会阻碍孩子进入自己理想的高中。
美国高中大体上分为走读高中和寄宿高中两类,理论上由在校生的寄宿率作为分类标准。寄宿高中由于在学校资源、课程设置、教学连贯度等方面具有明显优势,排名靠前的美国高中也多为寄宿高中,这使得寄宿高中成为众多中国家长的头号选择,同时也使得寄宿高中的申请变得难上加难。
2017年美国高中的录取结果更是揭示了这是美高录取历史上竞争最为激烈的一年,排名前50的美国高中平均每所学校收到了250份来自中国地区学生的申请,而每所学校仅发放了2-3个录取名额。在这样的大背景下,启德留学却逆流而上,录取捷报创下历史新高,共收获27枚美国顶尖寄宿高中的录取,其中包括4枚菲利普斯安多佛中学、1枚菲利普埃克赛特中学、2枚米尔顿中学、1枚乔特罗斯玛丽中学、2枚劳伦斯威尔高中、2枚霍奇基斯学校、1枚圣马可中学、1枚塔夫脱中学、1枚布莱尔学院、1枚北野山高中,而这些都是美国最顶尖申请难度最大的寄宿高中。

所谓招生数据,即是要了解在每一个申请年中,每所高中计划招收多少学生,男生女生各多少人,针对9年级还是10年级招生。这些信息可以帮助学生尽早锁定合适的目标院校,获得起点优势,从而有机会脱颖而出进入院校招生办的最终审核名单。如2017年威利斯顿∙诺塞普顿中学仅在全中国超过260名的申请者中招收2名学生,庞弗雷特中学则仅有2个录取名额开放给申请9年级的男生。这些数字对于学生制定申请策略至关重要,而获得这些战略性的数据,并根据这些数据进行申请规划,就要求申请家庭与资深的顾问及导师进行紧密合作。
那么SSAT和TOEFL等标化成绩是越高越好吗?启德留学的备战思路是,帮助学生拿到满足标准的最低标化成绩即可,不会在标化成绩上给学生过多的压力。这样学生才可以有更多的精力关注面试准备、暑期访校及与学校的月度沟通。因为仅仅有出色的标化成绩已经不足以让学生进走进理想的高中的大门,各所学校的招生委员会对学生的要求已经远远超过这些。
标化成绩的准入门槛之外,美国寄宿高中在寻找什么样的学生?作为申请策略的一部分,我们需要通过实践项目让美国寄宿高中看到每一个学生的性格特征,看到他/她是一个可以为世界带来改变的人,从而认可并愿意接纳我们的学生。相较于寻找超高分的标化成绩,招生官更青睐有趣的、爱好广泛的学生,他们不仅希望看到一份光鲜的简历,更希望学生可以讲出自己做每一件事背后的动因,希望学生在关注自身的同时乐于与身边的世界产生连接。
在实践上,启德留学会将学生优势及背景与学校的申请需求进行匹配,我们曾经鼓励一个热爱篮球的学生追求自己的爱好,在学生和我们的共同努力下,他最终发起了一个名为“为知识上篮”的慈善项目。最终也正是这个项目,让他在成绩单上有B甚至C的成绩的情况下,依然拿到了布莱尔高中的录取。类似的例子还有很多,我们的一名学生SSAT成绩92%,最终被全美排名第一的寄宿高中安多佛录取,另外一名学生SSAT成绩90%,最终被劳伦斯威尔高中录取。另外两位学生SSAT成绩分别是89%和75%,TOEFL成绩分别是100和104,他们最终都被威利斯顿∙诺塞普顿中学及其他几所排名前50的寄宿高中录取。

2017 boarding school results have revealed the most competitive year yet in the US boarding school admissions process. Top 30 and Top 50 schools alike experienced upwards of 250 applicants from China for 2-3 spots. Learn from PO how to capitalize on the key points in the admissions process for maximum success.
It’s critical to know the numbers of how many students, boys and girls, boarding schools are looking for in a given year for both 9th and 10th grade. Having students apply to schools where they have an initial advantage is crucial for getting students through to the final round of admissions decisions where they are seriously considered for acceptance. Williston Northampton School had 2 slots for over 260 applicants from China. Pomfret had only 2 slots for 9th grade boys. These numbers are crucial to know when strategizing your applications – even a top 50 school like Williston Northampton cannot be considered a safety. These numbers are the numbers that families must work strategically with an experienced coach and mentor to understand and apply to the application process. The traditional scores of SSAT and TOEFL do not gain students a place at the table. Admission committees are looking well beyond this, and we played these admission numbers to our students’ advantage. It was not the highest test scores that gained acceptance.
PO matches student strengths and background with school needs as we encouraged one student to fully pursue his passion for basketball and expand this to a charity project we founded with him entitled Layups for Literacy to ultimately gain him acceptance to Blair despite Bs and even a C on his transcript. We work with students to get the minimum testing score needed without pushing beyond it so that they can focus on interview prep and relationship building with the school through summer visits and ongoing monthly communication. We shape their essays and follow up email strategy around a key theme that resonates with their personality and the school.
One of our students had a SSAT score of 92% and this student gained acceptance to Andover.
Another one of our students had a SSAT score of 90% and this student gained acceptance to Lawrenceville.
Finally, we had two students who had SSAT scores of 89% and 75% and TOEFL scores of 100 and 104, respectively, and they both gained acceptance to Williston Northampton School among a few others in the top 50.
It's all about the relationships built upon face-to-face interactions with these schools who know PO’s mission and vision and see us as partners in our shared goal of global education and empowerment. Hosting admissions officers for quality interaction with students across China; visiting admissions in their home territory and not only communicating with admissions but also connecting with passionate teachers and counselors across the schools as we experienced each building and program. The vision from their eyes of what education and our students could be came back with us as PO shared this fire and potential with our students in interview prep and school selection strategy. It's not about a name and title or one phone call, but about continuous and mutual communication.
