Personal Statement

The universe is mysterious and complicated. But there are always two strings running through. One is Philosophy and the other is Mathematics. The latter is playing a significant role as the basis of all other sciences. Putting it more practically, with the information explosion as the context, Mathematics and Statistics will be essential tools for us to collect, process and manage the information and data. This has inspired my long and continuous interest. Therefore, I have taken a minor program in Probability Statistics and Actuarial Insurance while undertaking the undergraduate education at Jilin University, a key and old member of the 985 Project and the 211 Project that enjoys excellent reputation not only for its overall performance but also for its academic strength in Mathematics and Statistics. Up to now, I have achieved an overall score of 93.29% for the minor program, which ranks Top 1 out of 243 in the faculty. This boosted my confidence and confirmed my determination to further study it.

Such a remarkable performance should be a powerful demonstration of my passion and talent in Mathematics, which won me membership of the Mathematical Association with the high recommendation of my instructors. This is a key academic organization of Jilin University, playing as the base for mathematical contests and examinations and taking the responsibility of designing mid-year test papers for mathematical courses of 17 faculties and organizing regular trainings for mathematical contests. Thus, 37 members are all mathematical elites with top scores. My academic capacity soon made me stand out and promoted me to the position as vice president ever since September 2017. Meanwhile, I have worked as president of the Mathematical Modeling Association of North East China Region since Sep 2016 and organized a lot of mathematical training, seminars and contests. To seek continuous motivations and progress, I also participated in various contests, such as the National-level Mathematical Contest in Modeling in 2017 for which I won the First Prize in Jilin area and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling USA in April 2019 for which I was awarded the honor as Memorable Winner. In June 2019, I have just achieved the First Prize for the 9th MathorCup High Education Mathematical Modeling Competition.

Apart from the minor program, I have taken two major programs and achieved an overall score of 91.44% for Accounting and 91.82% for Business English, both of which rank Top 1 in the specialties. I also achieved an IELTS of 8.0. Being top for one thing requires full concentration, great effort and special talent. But being top for all things requires much more, such as high self-discipline, constant perseverance and the ability to plan the timetable and to cope with stress. To my great pride, I managed them all, achieving top scores for all three programs, winning various scholarships and awards (listed in the resume attached) and becoming a legend among my fellow students.

My tries and achievements have never been restricted to coursework only, however. By participation of various academic conferences, such as the International Academic Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering in 2018, I gained access to latest trends and many experts and composed two reports that have been officially accepted by the conference. Thereafter, I did researches in various social concerns in China, such as leftover children, youth drug addiction and rehabilitation and online tourism, and composed five essays as the first author, most of which were published by national level journals. Majority of my part was contributed to data statistics and analysis, thanks to which, my capacity to apply Mathematics cross different disciplines has been well developed. In the Graduation Thesis that I have recently finished, I discussed the relation between the quality of executive staff (gender, education level and oversea background) and the risk of stock price collapse. It has been collected by the university as a Distinguished Thesis, an honor that only two of each faculty can be awarded. All these research and thesis experiences have familiarized me with the process of an independent research project, such as object targeting, sample investigations, data processing and model building. This, I believe, will catch your special attention, since research ability will be essential for future study with you.

There is always a gap between book knowledge and practical work. In order to bridge it, I participated in various competitions in 2018, such as the Biochemistry & Medicine Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition of Jilin Province in May, for which we earned a profit of RMB 100,000 and won the first prize. Then it was followed by the Fourth National “Internet Plus” Contest in July. With cooperation with Changchun University of Science and Technology, we developed a smart portable thermal imager. By careful design of each detail of the product and tailored marketing plans, we successfully won the first order of 100 pieces from the First Hospital of Jilin University and earned a profit of RMB 200,000. A long-term cooperation contract has also been reached. Such outstanding performance won us a gold award in the university round and a bronze award in the national round.

For competitions alike, I often worked as team leader, responsible for team building, brainstorming, and process control, in the course of which, I contributed most of the acceptable ideas. The most challenging part was to mediate between different parties and opinions, but I managed it, not only as a competent team leader but also as a cooperative team player. This has well prepared me for future internships with best employers such as Accenture and Mercedes-Benz. For Accenture, I worked at the Department of Management Consulting in Shanghai, responsible for translating and abstracting proposals and prediction data regarding assets management from the four leading accounting firms, supporting the program manager in SAP program management and assisting the department in financial prediction modeling. I made careful illustrations of all the information in PowerPoint independently and presented them before the team five times. It also contributed a great part to the seasonal report. With high efficiency, excellent teamwork and good accomplishment of all the tasks, I successfully rivaled 35 interns and became the only one who received a long-term offer. For Mercedes-Benz, I worked for the Product and Strategy Department in Beijing, responsible for collecting data about luxurious automobile brands, market share prediction and SUV development, analyzing the difference between outer and inner data and providing references for future marketing plans and decisions. To get the most accurate and updated data, I proactively did telephone investigations with 4S dealer for 11 times. Additionally, I have also undertaken internships with China Citic Bank in auditing assistance and Continental Automobile Electronics in financial assistance.

I have benefited a lot from internships with world-leading companies as mentioned above. Firstly, my strength in mathematical analysis and modeling has been well recognized. Secondly, it enhanced my capacity to cope with stress when faced with challenging tasks and heavy workload. Thirdly, it motivated me to improve and challenge myself constantly, to compete with elite colleagues from all over the world. Going abroad and taking a master degree at a top university like you then seems quite necessary for me.

In the summer break of 2017, I went to Korea for an exchange program at Hanyang University, focusing on preceding Mathematical issues. In June 2018, I took an exchange program to Tokyo Metropolitan University in Japan. Then from July to August 2018, I successfully won admission to an exchange program to the University of British Columbia, Canada with full scholarship. I have taken New Enterprise Development and Strategic Management and achieved top scores of 98% and 93% which has been well recognized by my instructor Dr. Ivan Surjanovic with a letter of high recommendation and praise. These short-term programs have well adapted me to life and study in a foreign country and developed my capacity to deal with cultural diversities.

Success in academic and professional scope is not the only thing that I care about. Instead, I devoted quite some of my time in volunteer work for the poor and the weak. I have worked for the First Hospital of Jilin University as a volunteer guide for more than 100 hours. I also paid special attention to education of the disabled and once led a team and attracted RMB 4000 for the Special Education College of Changchun University. In early 2019, I participated in a volunteer internship with NGO in Rome to build and maintain the web for a refugee-supporting program. It was followed by my working as a volunteer English teacher for Sansuk School in the border area of Cambodia. I also led a team from Jilin University and participated in the National Model United Nations Conference in New York, delegating Azerbaijan. Taking part in the United Nationals Environment Assembly, I was responsible for analyzing the environmental problems of Azerbaijan and seeking solutions and won the honor as Excellence for the team. As to me, real success of an individual should benefit people around me and contribute to the improvement of the wellbeing of humans.

To make a conclusion of this statement, I define myself as a good time and life planner, a firm goal pursuer, a dedicated learner, a cooperative team player, a competent leader, a generous love-giver and a global citizen. No matter which identity I am holding, I get the willingness and capacity to become the best. The next identity for me would be an international student with you and I am sure I will do beyond your expectations.
