　　I could sense A’s excitement and enthusiasm for current events and history from the moment I met her. As we prepped for interviews, I would listen in wonder as she shared her thoughts on Eli Weisel’s book Night and articulated its affect on her own understanding of Nazism and World War II. She tied this to her own family history as she described her grandfather’s experience with the Japanese during the Second World War and the interest that this sparked in the Pacific Theater. This interest in the past also linked with her fascination with current events and understanding how history shaped our current understanding. Despite her articulate responses and clear interest in a range of subjects, Aoftens second guessed her essay ideas and written responses. We discussed extensively how to link these interests back to her personal story and perspective. We worked tirelessly on the one boarding school prompt that asked students to write their own obituary as we pieced together A’s divergent dreams of volunteering in a third world country, serving on the UN and winning a professional golf tournament. Watching A clarify her voice and streamline some of her goals was fun and rewarding to see. It all culminated in her acceptance to her dream school, Choate.
